What does Success mean to you? Part 1
We are here to talk about success in all of its various forms. But before we can do that we need to look at what success means to you personally.
Most people will think of success in terms of money, fame, or power.
However, let me challenge the thought process for a moment by asking a handful of questions.
Money: It can buy stuff that you want. It can take you on vacations. The question is does it truly buy you success? You can have a lot of money, and still be miserable in life, love and resented by others.
Fame: Sure fame can be a useful tool for some people. But fame and glory are often fleeting. You have heard about “the 15 minutes”. Everyone wants their 15 minutes of fame because it will make them feel better in many cases. But does that make you successful?
Power: Even if you’re the most powerful person on the planet, and you can have people do your bidding at the drop of a pin, would that be success to you? To some it might.
Now that you are actively thinking about what success means to you, let me explain what it means to me.
Success – Means the ability to do that which you love to do, or that which you need to do, when you want to or need to do it.
Read that again just in case you’re not sure.
In life there are generally only a few types of things we do each day. We either do things we enjoy doing, we do things we need to do, or we do stuff we do not like doing.
Most of us would love to take nice vacations. We would love to have time off, sit on a beach and relax for a week. These can be anything we like to do in our free time. Those items that we gravitate towards.
Most people need to do some things in life, such as taking care of your children, your pets, chores around the house. These are things that simply just need to be done each day.
For instance, most people do not like going to work for a living. Most people do not like getting root canals. These are things we would do without if we could.
By my definition, being a success would allow me to concentrate on 2 out of 3 of these options, hopefully leaving out the things that I do not like.
In part 2, we will start looking into what can be done to become a success.
To your future success.
